Instead of a river, God often gives us a brook, which may be running today, and dried up tomorrow.  Why?

It is to teach us not to rest in our blessings, but in the Blesser, Himself.  “Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe.”  (Psalm 119:117)  “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”  (Isaiah 41:10)
