Responsibilities of Membership

“First, that believers, all and every one, as members of Christ have part in Him and in all His treasures and gifts; secondly, that each one must feel himself bound to use his gifts, readily and cheerfully, for the advantage and welfare of other members.” (Heidelberg Catechism, Q. 55)

Employ your spiritual gifts

Use your spiritual gifts in loving service toward one another. Without each member the church cannot function fully. In showing interest in and encouragement for their spiritual and physical needs, you will find yourself working together with us toward common goals.

Be committed to the congregation

Belonging to a local church demands loyalty and commitment.

Attend the stated public services faithfully

Have regular fellowship with Christ and other believers as they gather each Lord’s Day. Jesus himself made it his custom to worship each week with God’s people. Regular attendance will surely encourage you and strengthen you in your love for God and his people. If you are there the church is enriched; if you are absent the church is the poorer.

Pray for and with the Church and its members

Pray for the church—the pastor, elders, deacons, members, ministries, youth and children, special needs and opportunities. Prayer should be offered for the church throughout the world and for all mission efforts.

Make regular and diligent use of the means of grace

Communicant members are to partake regularly of the Lord’s Supper. Members are to have their children baptized and give attention to family worship and the catechetical training of their children.

Be involved in evangelistic outreach

Members are to labor faithfully to bring others to Christ. All members should invite others to public worship and greet worshipers and newcomers in a friendly way. If a member knows of someone who wishes to inquire further about the Christian faith or who is interested in church membership, he can also serve by introducing that person to the church and its leadership.

Become a part of the worldwide missions work

A member is expected to honor the Lord Jesus Christ by seeking first His kingdom. Prayer and giving toward missions is needed to fulfill Christ’s Commission to His church.

Give of your finances as the Lord prospers you

Members are to contribute liberally in proportion to their means, toward the support of the church and its ministry. Such giving should be done regularly, cheerfully, and with a spirit of gratitude to God.

Submit to the authority and oversight of the elders

Acknowledge the elders’ authority and oversight as shepherds of Christ’s flock. While seeking to care for each member, the elders seek to defend the unity, peace, and purity of Christ’s church.
